Tuesday Morning Notes

October 4, 2011

COUNTY VISITS BY DEAN BURGESS:

Dean Burgess is still very interested in making a personal visit to each
County Extension office but his time schedule has not permitted this to
happen by mid-October as originally planned. I am still working with him to
schedule his visits to counties and rest assured that he will be coming to
visit your office, faculty and staff in the near future.

NIFA CHANGES:

We recently learned that Dr. Roger Beachy has stepped down as the director
of the National Institutes of Food and Agriculture. Chavonda Jacobs Young
is serving as Acting Director. You can learn more about her at:
http://www.nifa.usda.gov/newsroom/bio.html.

BUILDING COMMUNICATION LINKS FOR EXTENSION:

In an effort to provide an avenue for increased communication, I have
launched a "Director <http://uacedirectorsblog.wordpress.com/> 's Blog" as a
part of our Extension website. You can find a link to it on the right side
of the Extension homepage, right below the calendar, located with Social
Media links - look for <http://uacedirectorsblog.wordpress.com/> "Read Us!"
Once there, you can subscribe to this blog by clicking "Follow" on the far
right side of the blog and you will be notified when I post anything new.
You can also add your own comments. The UA Extension Director's blog is
intended to share relevant and timely information, news and insights that
affect the broad range of issues related to Cooperative Extension programs.
These occasional posts provide ready access to "news you can use" and will
hopefully stimulate your own insights and ideas.

Another way to contact us is through the "Director
<http://extension.arizona.edu/state/directors-suggestion-box> 's Suggestion
Box" located under the red Employee tab, then under the Personnel Resources
tab. If you have a tip to share, something you see that needs to be
changed, or ideas for helping us be more effective, use this site to send
your suggestion, comment, question, concern or cost-saving tip. Submissions
are anonymous. I want to encourage everyone to consider ideas for helping
us improve.

USDA/NIFA ON-LINE FUNDING PROPOSAL:

I learned this week that ESCOP (Experiment Station Committee on Policy)
unanimously voted down the one-line funding proposal I described in an
earlier issue of TMN. This effectively kills the proposal and we will have
to wait and see how future funding for NIFA is supported and configured.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK:

FileHippo.com has a program called Update Checker that is useful in making
sure programs are up to date. It will scan your computer for installed
software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com
to see if there are any newer releases. These are then displayed in your
browser for downloading. Not all programs are supported. You can download
the program at the FileHippo.com Update Checker web site
<http://filehippo.com/updatechecker/> . There are three programs in
particular (Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash and Oracle Java) that need to be kept
up-to-date because malware targets security vulnerabilities in those
programs.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

On Friday, October 7, beginning at 10:00am, the University of Arizona
Safford Agricultural Center will be holding its Annual Fall Field Day.
Several topics will be covered related to late season cotton production and
variety performance, including defoliation and harvest preparation
techniques. Representatives from major seed companies will be available for
discussion regarding variety performance in 2011 and availability of
varieties in 2012. The meeting will begin at 10:00 am at the Safford Ag
Center (2134 S Montierth Lane, Safford) and will end with lunch served at
12:30. If you have any questions, contact Randy Norton (928.651.0420). Two
hours of CEUs have been requested from the Arizona Department of
Agriculture.

President Sander is hosting 3 Town Halls on campus and anyone in the campus
community is invited to attend. They are scheduled for October 12
(Gallagher Theater), November 16 (Gallagher Theater) and December 8 (DuVal
Auditorium) all from 12:00-1:00pm. If you are unable to attend, Arizona
Public Media will stream the town halls on its website. Most of the time
during the town halls will be dedicated to answering questions about
important issues facing the University. Additional details will be
available in next week's edition of Lo Que Pasa (www.lqp.arizona.edu).

Program details for the National eXtension Virtual Conference, scheduled for
October 17-19, are posted on the eXtension web site
