Dear Mitch,

Good morning. I hope all is well with you and that you are settling into a quiet and slow fall. I am doing well, but “quiet and slow” days are not on the horizon.

A major project I am leading is to try to find an excellent rangeland extension professional for the University of Idaho. This position is what we call an “Area Extension Educator” who will work out of Twin Falls or Boise. As you know, people with a good understanding of rangelands and grazing are few and far between. I figured I had nothing to lose to cast a wide net, so I am writing to nearly everyone in my address book.

Please take a moment and look around. Do you know anyone with a master’s degree and a good understanding of rangeland ecology and livestock grazing? If so, please forward this e-mail to them and let them know about this position.

Rangeland - Area Extension Educator

The University of Idaho Department of Forest, Rangeland and Fire Sciences seeks an Area Extension Educator in rangeland ecology and management. The position is a 12-month non-tenure-track position located in Boise or Twin Falls Idaho, with the following responsibilities: 80% outreach and Extension; 15% scholarship and creative activities and 5% university service and leadership.

This position has the primary responsibility of providing rangeland ecology and management outreach and Extension programming leadership and coordination on a statewide basis. Additional responsibilities include developing an externally funded, nationally recognized multi-faceted Extension program emphasizing rangeland ecology and management that is relevant and responsive to stakeholders in Idaho and the western United States. Collaboration with other faculty and staff in the College of Natural Resources and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, as well as with government agencies and key industry producer groups and commissions, is expected.

The position requires presentations of research-based information to managers and producers, as well as other clientele groups, at meetings, and through Extension publications and appropriate media outlets. The position will also focus on providing education on rangeland ecology and management to K-12 youth. Additionally, research-based information delivered at research seminars, participation in professional meetings and publishing in refereed journals is expected. Funding for Extension and research programming will be obtained from external competitive grants.
