The University of Montana (UM) O’Connor Center for the Rocky Mountain West is hiring RANGE MONITORING CREW LEADS AND TECHNICIANS to work on field crews.

We partner with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to implement their Terrestrial Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) strategy, which is targeted at collecting standardized inventory and long-term vegetation data at multiple scales across the BLM Districts in the Western U.S.

Work Details & Environment
   
   - Crews will receive training on the BLM’s AIM protocols.
   - Hitch schedule: 8 days on, 6 days off
   - Primitive car camping in isolated regions during the hitch.
   - UM provides trucks and equipment.
   - Hikes may be 6 or more miles a day in mountainous and desert-like terrain, elevation gains up to 2000 feet, carrying a 40 lb. pack.

Work Locations
   
   - Idaho – based in Boise, ID or Missoula, MT
   - Montana – based in Helena, MT
   - South Dakota – based in Spearfish, SD
   - Wyoming – based in Bozeman, MT

Compensation
   
   - $17-21 per hour, commensurate.
   - $244 meal per diem per hitch.
   - Up to $600 equipment reimbursement.
   - Worker’s compensation coverage, paid holidays and accrual of sick leave.

Education and Experience 
   
   - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in range science, ecology, botany, soil science, or related field preferred. Minimum three years of undergraduate coursework.
   - A minimum of one season of field data collection.
   - Experience driving 4WD trucks and navigating off-trail with compass and GPS.
   - Commitment to an entire field season required.
   - Ability to maintain productive working relationships with crew members and managers.
