Opening for Assistant Ranch Manager
Birdwell & Clark Ranch is looking towards the future. Afuture that includes a new generation of talent willing to learn, adopt andfurther implement regenerative ranching principles and practices. Specifically,the ranch is seeking to hire an Assistant Ranch Manager who will work directlywith the ranch owners with an open mind towards new methods in cattle handling,grazing management, soil and forage resiliency, profitability and production,and the worth of individual contribution and wellbeing. Experience working withstocker cattle, managing personnel, and executing high density grazing plansare highly valued attributes of applicants. The Birdwell and Clark ranch is a 12,000 acre ranch in NorthCentral Texas near Henrietta, Texas. The ranch is a stocker operation running7,000 + head of cattle in various enterprises including a Big Herd on the ranch,cattle on wheat, and cattle on leased grass pastures in other locations.
The Assistant Manager position at Birdwell and Clark Ranchis open to a qualified applicant looking for a continued learning experience inregenerative ranching practices, training and managing a competent andproductive labor pool, contributing to the health of livestock, managing ranchresources including equipment and infrastructure, and desirous of a long-termassociation with the ranch.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Train and manage 3 – 4 employees with a focus on teamwork,productivity, profitability, and continued learning in regenerative practices
• Make effective decisions to support herd and individualanimal health following ranch protocols
• Implement actions required to successfully implement thegrazing plan developed by ranch owner; plan involves multiple daily moves ofthe herd(s) requiring moving and monitoring water troughs and polywire fencingand allocating labor as needed
• Maintain equipment and organization of ranch inventory oftools and materials
• Communicate routinely with ranch owners regarding dailyoperations; participate in management discussions regarding budgets andfinancial goals
• Participate in biological monitoring practices andprotocols
New Responsibilities and Opportunities:
• Learn to use dogs effectively in herd management duringmoves; opportunity to own dogs
• Maintain 3 – 4 work horses on ranch; grass and feedprovided; arena available for riding and training during personal time
• Opportunity to run and own cattle; specifics and detailsto be determined
• Participate in continuing education workshops and classesfocused on soil health, grazing management, and monitoring protocols
• Participate in helping ranch evaluate new livestockenterprises
• If applicant has a spouse or partner, there is possibilityof an administrative and bookkeeping position depending on experience
Core Competencies Required:
• Ability to identify and treat “sick cattle”
• Experience with low stress cattle handling techniques
• Prior experience managing employees in a teamwork context
• Ability to operate and maintain ranch equipment
• Eagerness and openness to learn new skills in cattlehandling, forage monitoring, and grazing planning
• Resourceful in problem solving, demonstrating initiative,and effective communication skills
