POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP: POLICIES FOR THE GRAZING-CONSERVATION INTERFACE
Summary:
Grazing by domesticated livestock is one of the most pervasive disturbances shaping diversity, structure and dynamics of arid and semi-arid grasslands globally. While numerous studies of the ecological impacts of livestock grazing on dryland systems exist, landscape-level conservation objectives are often not explicitly incorporated into range management. Improved grazing policies that promote responsible land management could benefit these ecosystems while supporting the long-term livelihoods of ranchers, rural communities, and land stewards by identifying opportunities for sustainable production and disincentivizing practices that result in rangeland degradation. This post-doctoral position will synthesize, interpret, and communicate the results from long-term ecological research on grazing impacts, and help strengthen regional relationships among rangeland ecologists, ranchers, land managers, and conservation leaders on the Colorado Plateau. Working collaboratively, the postdoctoral fellow will contribute to the development of independent, science-based recommendations for grazing policy reform. Opportunities to develop research proposals to extend the post-doctoral position beyond the initial appointment and/or advance the fellow's research program in this area will be provided.
Position description:
The Center for Adaptable Western Landscapes seeks a postdoctoral fellow to synthesize research on the effects of grazing on arid and semi-arid grasslands globally, and to work with regional stakeholders to develop policy recommendations for dryland grazing. Project funding is available to cover the costs of travel and collaborations with stakeholders. The appointee will:
1. Compile and synthesize existing literature on the ecological and biodiversity impacts of grazing;
2. Interpret the findings of the literature review in the context of grazing, rangeland, and restoration policies in the US, and comparable settings globally;
3. Convene regional grazing stakeholders to contribute to policy recommendations;
4. Develop policy recommendations for sustainable range management in the US Southwest, and explore connections to rangeland management worldwide;
5. Deliver recommendations to key audiences, through talks, presentations, relevant reports and scientific publications;
6. Initiate and support the development of proposals and/or projects to further applied grazing-related ecological and conservation research at NAU in collaboration with partnering individuals and organizations.
The appointee will work closely with Dr Sara Souther (Primary Investigator) and in collaboration with Drs Thomas Sisk and Duan Biggs.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in environmental policy or conservation science, broadly defined. The ideal candidate will be skilled in metanalysis and/or synthesis of the scientific literature; have experience working with diverse stakeholders to develop policy recommendations; and have experience and interest in leading the collaborative development of recommendations that support policy generation and the achievement of conservation and sustainability goals in arid rangelands.
