PAID SUMMER 2019 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
“Science in Action” Summer Internships at the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS)

The USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA) is partnering with four-year Minority Serving Institutions to offer highly qualified students professional experience through our newly established “Science in Action” summer training program.

This unique training program provides students the opportunity to study with world-renowned scientists in the USDA-ARS-PWA to gain hands-on experience working on cutting edge research in many areas including: Food Science, Crop Production, Plant Genetics and Breeding, Entomology, Natural Resources, Bioproducts, and Engineering. This is a fully funded 8-week summer internship. Based on successful completion of the first year, students may have an option to complete a second 8-week internship the following summer.

Internships will be offered in the following states: California, Utah, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

Students are required to complete an application, including a current resume, official transcripts and two letters of recommendation.

Internship Program Goals
Interns will develop skills and knowledge to better prepare them for science jobs with USDA-ARS-PWA.

Interns will develop meaningful relationships with USDA-ARS Scientists and Technicians which will lead to a better understanding of career opportunities with USDA-ARS-PWA.

USDA will benefit by developing a more diverse candidate pool for hiring future employees.

Applicant Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
· Be a U.S. citizen or have Permanent Resident status
· Currently be enrolled and have completed at least one year of attendance at a Minority Serving Institution
· Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)
· Major in an area of study associated with agriculture, horticulture, forestry, food science, nutrition, natural resources, or related sciences
· Complete Program Application
· Provide a resume, official transcripts and 2 Letters of Recommendation

The application deadline is February 28, 2019.  All students will be notified once selections are made and further details on how to proceed will be discussed at that time.
