Grass Class!

July 6 and 12, 2018

University of Arizona Herbarium in Herring Hall



The University of Arizona Herbarium and the Arizona Native Plant  Society will be teaming up again to teach a grass identification class. Native grasses offer a special challenge because of their tiny flower parts and a tendency to all look astonishingly similar. To get started with grasses, it is essential to understand the terminology and how it pertains to the specimen on your microscope stage. This class is designed to introduce botanists to the terms and how to apply them to real field-specimens.

The class will be taught by Mike Bauer, University of Arizona Herbarium,  and will consist of two six-hour days of training. The first day will be lecture and lab and the second mostly lab. Mike has worked up an excellent set of handouts on common local grasses, grass parts, and grass tribes that will help folks who are new to grasses focus on what is most important for identifying them. The class is two days long and each day-long session will be held on a Friday. The course will be taught at the University of Arizona Herbarium (Herring Hall).  The cost to students is $40, and the funds will go to the University of Arizona Foundation and the Arizona Native Plant Society.
