Dear Professor Howery,

We are looking for a few young people with grit, character, integrity, and a passion to learn.  We hopethat you may have some students who would benefit from these paid internship positionsthat you will encourage to apply. You are welcome to forward this flyer to anycolleagues you may think would be interested. In addition, if you have a studentlooking for a research project, we’d like to hear from you.

Alderspring Ranch has been producing certified organic 100%grass fed beef in the mountains of Central Idaho for nearly 25 years.  In 2014 we initiated an innovativeconservation riding pilot project using full time herding of cattle on a 70square mile native mountain range. The goals of the study are to evaluate theefficacy of herding to reduce resource impacts (specifically endangered fishand sage grouse, as well as riparian conditions and rare plant populations), andto eliminate losses to wolf predation, sickness, and poisonous plants. Inaddition, early results suggest that increases in cattle performance and weightgain with full time herding may completely or partially offset the increasedcost of management. The study involves both natural resource monitoring andfinancial monitoring to determine feasibility of full-time conservation herdingto address federal rangeland conflicts.

Summer employees and interns will be part of 3 person teams thatwill camp out and herd cattle for 4 day rotating stints. Herding days are longand physically demanding, but will only be required for 4 days out of 10-12. Inbetween cow camp stints, interns will work on organic weed control and resourcemonitoring.

The country is stunning, and the ranch’s full time andsummer staff is comprised of exceptional individuals with experience in naturalhorsemanship, ecology, resource monitoring, and sustainable agriculture. Wemaintain a positive, can-do atmosphere. Many young people who have worked hereclaim an Alderspring Ranch experience to be pivotal for their development, bothpersonally and professionally.

Employees and interns will learn backcountry skills, horsemanship, animal behavior, low stress herding techniques, resourcemonitoring, western rangeland ecology, and how to work with diverse people aspart of a team. Motivated interns are welcome to also participate on the homeranch and learn about managing intensive grazing on irrigated pasture, selecting finish animals for processing, herd health, marketing, fabrication ofbeef for retail sales, customer relationships, and long distance sales forremote locations like ours.

Alderspring Ranch has been recognized for growing the bestgrass fed beef in the country (Forbes Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, theGlobe and Mail, the Dr. Oz Show). The ranch is run by its owners, Glenn andCaryl Elzinga, their daughters, and a small group of stellar employees.

Thank-you,

Glenn Elzinga
