integrity, and a passion to learn. We hope
that you may have some students who would benefit from these paid internship positions
that you will encourage to apply. You are welcome to forward this flyer to any
colleagues you may think would be interested. In addition, if you have a student
looking for a research project, we’d like to hear from you.

grass fed beef in the mountains of Central Idaho for nearly 25 years. In 2014 we initiated an innovative
conservation riding pilot project using full time herding of cattle on a 70
square mile native mountain range. The goals of the study are to evaluate the
efficacy of herding to reduce resource impacts (specifically endangered fish
and sage grouse, as well as riparian conditions and rare plant populations), and
to eliminate losses to wolf predation, sickness, and poisonous plants. In
addition, early results suggest that increases in cattle performance and weight
gain with full time herding may completely or partially offset the increased
cost of management. The study involves both natural resource monitoring and
financial monitoring to determine feasibility of full-time conservation herding
to address federal rangeland conflicts.

will camp out and herd cattle for 4 day rotating stints. Herding days are long
and physically demanding, but will only be required for 4 days out of 10-12. In
between cow camp stints, interns will work on organic weed control and resource
monitoring.

summer staff is comprised of exceptional individuals with experience in natural
horsemanship, ecology, resource monitoring, and sustainable agriculture. We
maintain a positive, can-do atmosphere. Many young people who have worked here
claim an Alderspring Ranch experience to be pivotal for their development, both
personally and professionally.

horsemanship, animal behavior, low stress herding techniques, resource
monitoring, western rangeland ecology, and how to work with diverse people as
part of a team. Motivated interns are welcome to also participate on the home
ranch and learn about managing intensive grazing on irrigated pasture,
selecting finish animals for processing, herd health, marketing, fabrication of
beef for retail sales, customer relationships, and long distance sales for
remote locations like ours.

grass fed beef in the country (Forbes Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, the
Globe and Mail, the Dr. Oz Show). The ranch is run by its owners, Glenn and
Caryl Elzinga, their daughters, and a small group of stellar employees.
