Position Description:
This internship will provide exposure to the Forest Service, and opportunities to enhance inventory and monitoring practices. The intern will receive training in the use of corporate databases, vegetation inventory and monitoring protocols, data collection techniques, GIS, and other related software. The intern will also develop general skills needed to design and implement vegetation inventory, monitoring programs, and conduct basic ecological modeling. The position will begin in early August, and continue full-time for 52 weeks.
Major duties will include, but not limited to:
* Conduct Region-wide assessment of current vegetation inventory and monitoring activities, and identify areas where data gaps exist.
* Explore corporate applications and databases to determine analytical capacity as it relates to project- and Forest-level analysis and planning.
* Develop and/or consolidate practical vegetation inventory and monitoring protocols for forested and non-forested ecosystems, with a focus on forest understory and grassland species, as well as rare plants.
* Develop data management and data analysis workflows for field use
* Use a variety of communications tools to share information with internal and external stakeholders.
Desired knowledge, skills or abilities:
* A natural resources or biological degree.
* Ability to perform duties in an office setting, as well as, field assignments which may result in exposure to hazards associated with foot travel to remote forested area.
* Demonstrated experience in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting ecological data.
* Experience with GIS and ecological modeling is preferred.
* Demonstrated ability to learn new software programs, such as Forest Service applications and corporate databases, as well as external software related to data collection and analysis.
* Interpersonal communication, public speaking, and/or customer service experience with an emphasis on partnership and stakeholder engagement.
* Experience writing reports and creating and coordinating presentations using various software programs such as PowerPoint, Illustrator, AdobeConnect, etc.

Compensation: $12/hour
