Subject: In-field opportunity for courses at Saguaro NP
Hello Mitch McClaran,
I would like to inform you about an exciting volunteer group opportunity happening at Saguaro National Park, the Centennial Saguaro Survey! Since our main focus for the next year is the NPS's centennial and to bring more local students to the park, what better way than to channel your inner Bill Nye and become a citizen scientist for the day. I would like to connect with you and your courses for this Centennial Saguaro Survey. Dana Backer thought it would be a good idea to send you this in-field opportunity since most of your courses focus on ecology and rangeland management.
>From October to April 2016 Resource Management will be re-surveying our saguaro plots and we need groups to help us out. In the past 70 years, plots have been surveyed for different reasons (bacterial necrosis, epidermal browning, elevation movement, etc.) to see what is negatively or positively affecting the saguaro forest ecology. With the help from your students, we will count the saguaros in a designated area, measure their height, and observe their physical characteristics. We want to detect if there is an increase of germination of saguaros, how much climate change is affecting the sonoran desert, and if the increase of invasive species is decreasing the population of saguaros.
The surveys will start in October and end in April 2016. These projects usually last around six hours so it will be an all day project for your students if that is possible.
Hopefully this sparks your interest, it would be fun to have your classes out here. You can find out more about this project by clicking the hyperlink under my name or from the attached flyers. Look forward to hearing from you, have a wonderful week!
Carolyn Harper
