This preserve protects the largest remaining stretch of Florida dry prairie, home to an array of endangered plants and animals. The park offers excellent seasonal birding opportunities and is home to the endangered Florida grasshopper sparrow, as well as the Crested Caracara and Sand-Hill Crane. Housing may be available in a state owned 3 bedroom, 2 bath house on site. JOB DUTIES: Conducts biological research projects and analyze the biological communities and other physical features. Plan, recommend, monitor, and complete and submit necessary reports on a timely basis on resource management projects, including but not limited to: prescribed burning, exotic species removal, plant community restoration, erosion control, pest species control and native wildlife management. Participate in the execution of all facets of prescribed fire. Prepare and update at least every ten years relevant portions of the Unit Management Plan. Consult with park manager and planners on the effects of design and development of park resources. Consults with other professionals regarding best management practices and their application. Recommend native plants for landscape projects. Conducts flora and fauna survey and coordinate biological monitoring. Utilizes state vehicles in performance of duties. Gather scientific and professional reports and other information through field observations and studies about natural history. Assembles this information into interpretive talks, brochures, exhibit copy, tour spiels, campfire and group programs and TV and radio presentations. Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position: Knowledge of: Plant taxonomy; Florida’s pyric communities and management needs; prescribed fire applications and techniques; successfully meet position-specific DRP Burn Standards for Prescribed Fire; research design and applications as they relate to ecosystem’s management. Skill in use of computers and ancillary devices. Ability to: conduct field research, data gathering and resource health assessment; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work well with others; develop and maintain files on research, monitoring, and other activities; make management recommendations and prepare pertinent portions of park management plan revisions; assemble and maintain species inventories to assess the health of ecosystems and constituent changes; maintain a valid driver’s license; operate 4x4 vehicles and all-wheel drive equipment; work rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. Other job-related requirements for this position: Medical Monitoring – Hearing. Successful completion of annual moderate pack test. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced.
