AZNPS GRANT OPPORTUNITIES
The Tucson Chapter of AZNPS is again offering a Miller/Ginny Saylor Publication Grant for 2012.
In all, $1,000 is available to individuals or nonprofit organizations to assist in publishing––either traditionally or on the web––materials related to Arizona native plants. Membership in AZNPS is not required. One or more grants may be awarded to projects that will be judged on their a) contribution to scientific knowledge of native plants, b) public understanding of native plants and their environments, or c) conservation of native plants. These grants are to be used for publication costs only, not research.
The Tucson Chapter will also award one $500 Ginny Saylor Research Grant to an individual, group, or institution to support research that enhances our understanding of native Arizona plants. This grant is funded through a generous bequest from the estate of Ginny Saylor, a long-time Tucson Chapter member.
THE DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF ALL GRANT APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 31, 2012.
Details of the application process for both grants are at: http://www.aznps.com/grants.html
Contact Ries Lindley at Ries.Lindley @gmail.com if you have any questions.

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS FROM FRIENDS OF IRONWOOD NATIONAL MONUMENT:
AGUA DULCE TRASH PICK UP
Wednesday, February 29th - 8 am to 4 pm
Full day trash clean-up near Agua Dulce road (south of Avra Valley Road).
We can use the maximum number of volunteers at this site, a recently discovered undocumented immigrant lay-up area. The site location requires
a ¾ mile walk into the trash site.
Volunteers will meet up with the Bureau of Land Management 8 am, at the west side of I-10 interstate and Avra Valley road. There is a large area to park there. We are planning on a full day returning to the Interstate by around 4 pm.
The drive south on Agua Dulce is 5 minutes south of Avra Valley road. Volunteers will walk into site ¾ mile; pick up backpacks and trash and fill trash bags. There is such a large amount of trash, we will probably need to return another day to get it all. Some volunteers who want to be the walkers will be needed to walk the trash out to the road to the trucks. We do not want to bring in any vehicles, ATVs etc. which would cause more resource damage so we will carry the trash bags out to the Agua Dulce road. BLM will provide bags, gloves, dust mask, goggles. Bring your lunch, water, sunscreen, good hiking boots, long pants and long sleeved shirts, hat. We will make the bags light to get them to the truck. For this project, we ask that volunteers be in good physical health and be able to hike the distance to the site.
Please RSVP to Lahsha Brown at lahsha @ironwoodforest.org<mailto:lahsha at ironwoodforest.org?>
AVRA HILL WORK DAY
Tuesday, March 6th - 8 am - 1 pm
Half day restoration work at Avra Hill. Removing tire tracks of ATVs and vehicles where people have driven off the road and picking up trash at this location. We will collect dead and down vegetation and install it in a fashion called 'vertical mulching', move small boulders, and provide general clean up of the area. Volunteers can work as long as they feel like, longer than a half day if you want to.
Volunteers will meet up with the Bureau of Land Management 8 am, at the west side of I-10 interstate and Avra Valley road. There is a large area to park there. We are planning on a half day returning to the Interstate by around 1 pm.
Please RSVP to Lahsha Brown at lahsha @ironwoodforest.org<mailto:lahsha at ironwoodforest.org?>

GIANT REED REMOVAL IN BEAR CANYON
March 10, 2012
Come join like-minded volunteers to help combat giant reed (Arundo donax) in Bear Canyon Wash for the bi-annual Bear Canyon Wash Arundo removal event sponsored by Pima County Regional Flood Control District and The Nature Conservancy. The event will take place on Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 8 am until noon. Volunteers are needed to cut/bundle cane and dig/bag rhizomes within Bear Canyon Wash (see attached arundo removal guidelines). Since parking near the work site is limited, carpooling is recommended.
Volunteers will meet at the shopping center located on the NE corner of Tanque Verde and Bear Canyon Roads at 8 am. To reach the designated parking spot, take the second entrance (right) into the shopping center off of Bear Canyon Road and turn immediately left (see map). Parking spaces are available for volunteers to leave vehicles and carpool to the work site.
The work will be moderate to difficult with tools and gloves provided. Plan to bring water and snacks and wear sturdy shoes, hat, long-sleeved shirt, and pants. Water will also be provided. Please RSVP to Marisa Rice no later than March 8th via email or by calling 243-1800.

Join us May 3-6, 2012 at the Esplendor Resort in Rio Rico, AZ for the inaugural Nature and Heritage Festival: Birding and History Along the Santa Cruz.
The Santa Cruz Nature & Heritage Festival, Inc., Santa Cruz Valley Heritage Alliance, and Santa Fe Ranch announce the inaugural Nature & Heritage Festival, a celebration of International Migratory Bird Day and the rich heritage of the Santa Cruz River Valley in the U.S. and Mexico.
The Nature & Heritage Festival will introduce residents, tourists, educators, and professional tour guides to southern Arizona and northern Sonora’s safe, beautiful, diverse birding experiences.

Festival speakers include ornithologists, historians, archaeologists, border patrol officials, border community elected officials, and area residents. A special book signing with Thomas E.
