Dear Maryam,

Thank you for the update and this is very timely for us in the region. We recently got a small grant from Misereor towards IYRP and among the activities is the identification and translation of key messages.

We shall run through and provide feedback on this.

On the last question around SCP, I think while it would be great to have it as a theme for the reasons of greater visibility, I do think that it is more a function of healthy rangelands and healthy livestock therefore, spreading it would be more strategic to make us and all keep thinking about alongside every theme.

Kind regards,

Ken

Subject: [Risgchairs] Revision and updating of the IYRP 12 Global Themes

Dear RISG Chairs and WG Leads

The IYRP 12 Global Themes, one for each month of 2026, were originally developed in 2017 to a) highlight urgent and topical issues, and b) show how pastoralism and rangelands across the globe share similar issues and concerns. They are intended for a coordinated outreach strategy in 2026 by giving a common structure for the entire Global Alliance to use. We envisage that the Global Alliance and our partners will use the monthly themes to schedule activities around them ( webinars, side events, launching of films and publications, etc ). The key messages for each theme will provide the framework for consistent messaging by the entire Alliance.

Many of you are familiar with the graphic that we have been using so far (attached).

Much has happened since 2017, and therefore, the IYRP Global Secretariat has worked to update the monthly themes, and clarify the Key messages within each theme. The key messages are based on the 2017 ideas as well as on the recommendations of the IYRP Working Groups. These recommendations have been inserted wherever they are relevant and not necessarily only in one theme - some repetition is good.

This is guidance at the global level, and in English. We expect that each Region will be adapting them to their own audiences and needs and languages. So the sooner we can finalize this revision, the more time each IYRP partner will have to plan their activities for 2026.

The distribution of themes across the 12 months follows two criteria: 1) a consistent narrative, starting with "who we are" in January and finishing with a vision for the future in December , and 2) matching as much as possible the themes to International Days so as to capitalize on visibility and attention.

We now need your help before we can disseminate it to all of the Alliance.

1/ Please check the narrative - terminology can be very important and we want to get them right. Are the titles of each theme relevant ? Are the Key messages complete? Are there missing issues ?

2/ Please help us find examples, case studies, success stories that exemplify each of the Key Messages. Please insert your feedback into the attached Excel Sheet.

3/ We are struggling to see whether we should have a month devoted to "Sustainable production and consumption". (SCP). With the current version, almost every theme has something to say about SCP. However, a few issues may be missing, such as: animal nutrition, animal health and welfare, sustainable processing of animal products; consumption of healthy meat and milk products vs feedlot-based products vs plant-based products; importance of meat and milk for human nutrition; reducing food loss and waste; etc., Do you think it is better to consolidate these issues into a separate SCP theme, or to distribute them across the months? A separate SCP theme would mean greater visibility for these issues, but one of the other themes would have to be replaced. And we would need to set up a new WG on SCP.

Time is of the essence. We would be grateful if you would kindly consult your members and provide your feedback on all three points above at the latest by 15th March 2025.

Thank you so much as always
