Biosphere 2 Helper Position

Job summary
We are looking to bring on several enthusiastic students to help with management and maintenance of the various growing systems at Biosphere 2. Under supervision of the terrestrial biome manager, the successful candidates will perform various tasks within the biomes, including plant management, irrigation, pest control, and plant propagation. Work areas include the rainforest, savanna, desert, and mangrove biomes. Biosphere 2 also has on site a Freight Farm, a retrofitted shipping container with a hydroponic-based growing system inside; successful candidates will help manage and run this farm as well. If you are motivated and interested in working at a truly unique facility, this is the place for you.

Location
Biosphere 2 near Oracle, AZ.

Responsibilities

·      Perform general plant maintenance like pruning, weeding, irrigation, planting new plants, and removing dead biomass.

·      Implement integrated pest management principles to deal with pests found in the biomes.

·      Help maintain the hydroponic growing system in the Freight Farm, including planting and transplanting, pest monitoring and control, and harvesting.

·      Propagate and care for plants in the greenhouse.

·      Carry out other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

·      Experience in maintaining and propagating plants (classroom experience in horticulture, hydroponics, and/or plant propagation is acceptable).

·      Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including varying temperatures and humidities.

·      Driver’s license or reliable transportation to Biosphere 2. (A shuttle, which runs most days from campus, can be taken, if desired.)

·      Attention to detail.

·      Excitement to learn and grow!

Preferred Qualifications

·      Plant Science or Sustainable Plant Systems major.

·      Practical or classroom experience in hydroponics and greenhouse management.

·      Experience in Integrated Pest Management.

Compensation
$15/hour.

Schedule
Part time, up to 30 hours per week during the summer, 20 hours per week during the semester; we can be flexible depending on class schedule.
