Study Abroad in Africa and Learn about Wildlife Conservation:

2020 Desert Ecology and Conservation Biology in Namibia, Africa

Program Type: University of Arizona Faculty-led
[cid:image003.jpg at 01D5D29D.30113470]
Term: Summer I | 6 Units, Minimum GPA: 2.5 |open to all majors
Application deadline for the 2020 program: February 25, 2020
Spend the first half of your summer break in Africa exploring the outstanding diversity of large mammal species while earning six UA credits. Aside from observing large numbers of wild animals you will meet Africans who still adhere to their traditional cultures. For your education adventure you will stay in roof tents on 4x4 trucks throughout the program and interact with the famous Himba and San people. You will learn about real life African conservation challenges including elephants and large predators and get a hands-on introduction. This UA abroad program has been running every year since 2008 and served a large number of students over these 12 years. The program is open to all majors.
Here is what Kristen Costello, student Namibia program 2019, wrote about the program:
"This trip was a once in a lifetime experience, that I would not be able to find anywhere else. The firsthand experiences observing wildlife, seeing plants in their natural habitats, speaking with conservancies, and seeing the direct effects of conservation efforts taught me so much about this field. Being able to learn from observation and experience is something that cannot be taught in a classroom, and helped the information stay with me."

This program credit can be applied towards the UA International Environmental Conservation Undergraduate Certificate<https://snre.arizona.edu/academics/prospective-students/undergraduate-certificates>
This UA certificate program allows you to develop international experience in field settings related to conservation biology and environmental conservation, and can be added to your transcripts and resume. It emphasizes: Cultural immersion, experiential learning, student engagement outside of the classroom, field experiences in remote international settings, and hands-on learning while participating in international conservation.
The certificate requires 12 units of coursework that can also be used to satisfy Major or Minor requirements, including participation in one or more of our Study Abroad classes, and 3 – 6 units of course work related to environmental science and natural resources.
