A local non-profit is in the process of developing guidelines to support the City of Tucson's effort to build more tree canopy. They are seeking the help of undergraduate students for 3-12 months to compile related horticultural research available through scientific literature, interviews with local experts etc. If you have an interest in working in this area, you may volunteer, enroll with Prof. Quist for internship or directed research credit or, if you're eligible for FWS funding being hired as a student worker for the Campus Arboretum. Please see the attached grant submission to learn more or email me with questions.
Best regards,
Prof. Quist
Assessment of the Value of Native Trees in Urban Environments and Development and Dissemination of Best Practices to Increase their Use to Improve Urban Climate Change Resiliency
This Arizona Forestry Community Challenge Grant will be run through Tucson Clean & Beautiful/Trees for Tucson. I will be the main contractor on the grant, with Brad Lancaster subcontracting to me when he is available. It will fire up in the next 2 weeks once the contract is signed.
I've attached the grant application narrative. To cut to the chase, see the Scope of Work on page 2. The grant amount is $16,511, which is fully committed. It would be great to have the UA as a partners. Right now our major partners are Tucson Water (through Irene Ogata) , PAG (through Mead Mier), and SHADE Tucson (through Stuart Moody). We don't need any money, but it would be valuable to get in-kind assistance in the form of hours of work on elements of the scope of work. I think students would find the subject interesting. We aren't doing any original research, just compiling existing information and conducting interviews with relevant experts. We could use these work hours to help meet the required 1:1 grant match. Let me know what you think. I'm available to meet if that would be useful.
Ann
