Please consider the opportunities available to gain experience or earn academic credit at Mission Gardens. See the description below and the attached flyer for more information. Mission Garden Internships and Volunteer Opportunities

[cid:image007.jpg at 01D55803.26ACC260]Mission Garden is a living museum reviving the region's rich agricultural heritage by growing gardens representing 4,000+ years of cultivation in the Tucson basin.

This nearly 4-acre garden physically resembles the 18th-century walled garden that was associated with Mission San Agustín. However, inside are plots representing all historic eras and ethnic groups that have gardened on the floodplain of the Santa Cruz River. It is run by a non-profit called Friends of Tucson's Birthplace.



Information on the Program: Interns can do a wide range of tasks, including: gardening (weeding, mulching, planting, harvesting, orchard maintenance), seed saving, composting, sustainability, curating exhibits, development of new garden plots, phenology, documenting crops, creating a garden manual for volunteers, public outreach (giving tours, greeting visitors, working with school groups, and helping with and publicizing events) and advocacy. We may also need help with construction of a facsimile acequia (irrigation canal) and developing a food preparation demonstration program in our commercial kitchen. Individuals can take on specific responsibilities in accordance with their interests and abilities. Connect with history and with food! There will be a place for you at the garden!

Existing Garden Plots: Early Agriculture, Hohokam, Pre-contact O'odham, Post-contact O'odham, Spanish Colonial Orchard, Spanish Colonial Garden & Fields, Mexican Garden, Chinese Garden, Wild, native food plants ("Z's Garden), Medicinal Herb Garden, Children's Garden



Proposed Garden Plots: Yoeme Garden, African-American Garden, Statehood Garden, Tomorrow's Garden



Commitment and terms: Hours- At least 3 hours per week at flexible times, though most garden work is in the morning. Duration of the internship will be at least one semester, but internship terms can be negotiated. This is an unpaid internship, but students can earn academic credit for their work in consultation with their major advisor.
