Sustainable Food Production, Conservation, and Agriculture in the Southwest
RNR496B, Section 002 – Natural Resources Seminar
Fridays, 11:00am - Noon
1 Unit
Agriculture, and especially ranching, is central to our understanding of the history and environment of the western United States. In popular culture, western agriculture has as complex reputation – a part of our pioneer heritage and a symbol of environmental harm due issues such as overgrazing and water use. In this class will consider whether agriculture and ranching can be sustainably practiced in the Southwest. What is the relationship between agriculture, conservation, and sustainable land use? Can we continue to produce local food and sustain our environment in the arid southwest?
The class is discussion based and will feature guest speakers from the community and field trips to learn about the relationship between conservation and agriculture in the real world.
Students from all departments are welcome!
