VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
Volunteer Title: Citizen Scientist Internship
Note: We are requesting 10 individuals who have experience in hiking in the desert, interpretive skills, and an interest in nature and saguaros. We are continuing data collection on one of the longest ongoing surveys to monitor the cactus forest in regards to current concerns involving environmental changes.

Location: Both TMD and RMD
Ongoing ___ OR Start date: September 2015 End date April 2016
Time Commitment: Approximately 8-10 hours a week. Saturdays are ideal and some weekdays. Training will be provided in September.
Duties
* Work under experienced park staff to lead volunteer groups to monitor saguaros.
* Provide information about saguaros, objectives of the program, and how to collect data correctly.
* Assist in safety concerns and be knowledgeable in safety hazards in the park.
* Assist in other Resource Management division tasks (buffelgrass pulls, surveys, etc.).
* Contribute to existing data collection of the park’s cactus population.
* Increasing awareness of the park’s past and present ecological concerns.

Goal / Outcome of Job
Each day, we hope to record data on one of the park’s approximately 60 long term monitoring plots. Comparing accurate data to previous saguaro data collection.
Knowledge / Skills Desired and/or Required
* Ability to hike off-trail in the desert for distances of up to 1 mile and back at a reasonable pace.
* Interest in saguaros and scientific research.
* Interpretive skills and able to talk in front of groups.
* Work well with different age groups and skill sets.
Training / Preparation Required
Group leaders must attend an orientation on equipment use, data collection, safety practices, and the expectations of VIP representatives.
Other Requirements
The volunteer will be required to follow the policies detailed in the Saguaro Volunteer Handbook.
