Looking for a way to share your love of biology with others, serve your community, AND get credit?
Join SORT (STEM Outreach and Recruitment Team) and help K-12 kids, parents, and the general public learn about science!
SORT students serve the community by:
* Helping K-12 students and teachers, the general public, and their fellow undergraduates get excited and learn about science!
* Learning and conducting fun biology demonstrations for public events (both on and off campus)
* Organize engaging events for fellow college students, such as lab tours and workshops
* Helping high school students learn about what studying science at UA is like
* Assisting groups on campus with science outreach and recruitment
* Providing feedback to and/or judging K-12 students' science fair ideas and projects
What do SORT students gain?
* They hone their public speaking and presentation skills to talk about science to different audiences!
* They learn how to communicate science verbally and via media and film
* They can tailor their interests in sharing science with others; SORT students have the flexibility to choose from a variety of activities in which to participate over the course of the semester
Students in SORT will earn 1 unit of upper division credit for MCB 399, spending a grand total of 45 hours during the semester participating in a combination of the above activities and attending class meetings. Students will be given grades of Superior, Pass, or Fail, based on their attendance and participation.
To be eligible, you must:
* Be an UA sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in any biological science (MCB, Biology, EEB, Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Nutritional Sciences, etc.).
* Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
* Be able to consistently attend a 50-minute class meeting on Mondays, from 11:00AM to 11:50AM.
* Preferably have public speaking skills and be involved in independent research on campus.
Interested? Submit the following in a packet to Jennifer Cubeta in Life Sciences South #348 by noon on Friday, August 14, 2015:
* One letter of recommendation from a professor, TA, RA, high school teacher, etc.
* Your resume, including employment history, clubs/activities, and other commitments as appropriate (one page maximum).
* A statement of interest: How would participating in SORT play a role in your future educational and/or career goals? (no longer than one page)
We will inform you by the start of classes if you have been selected to participate.
