Position: Ph.D. Graduate Fellowship, Department of Environmental Horticulture



Location: University of Florida in Milton, West Florida Research and Education Center (WFREC) 5988 Highway 90, Milton, FL 32583.  Opportunities exist to complete some course work and research at the Gainesville campus.



Salary:     $22,000/year plus FULL tuition waiver, health benefits, and a possibility for graduate housing for up to 4 years.



Applications Open To: Qualified candidates beginning Spring 2015 for Fall Enrollment (2015).  This position will remain open until filled.



RESEARCH FOCUS:  The successful candidate will participate and lead a four-year research project focused on reproductive biology and propagation potential of plants from Florida natural ecosystems and their association with related native Flora.  Research emphasis will consist of (but is not limited to) seed physiology, ecology, photosynthesis and carbon assimilation, nutrient use efficiency, and/or cultivar evaluation.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The candidate must fulfill research requirements for a half-time assistantship (20 hrs/wk), course work, and teaching and research assistance as needed.  The candidate will actively publish and orally present their research findings.  In order to receive the full stipend and tuition waiver, the candidate must successfully compete for a CALS Alumni Fellowship.



LOCATION: WFREC in Milton, Florida is on the Gulf Coast in the Panhandle of Florida, Just miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Administrative offices are located at the Milton campus, and a 650 acre research station is located about 12 miles north of Milton in Jay, FL and 325 miles from the main UF campus at Gainesville. Research is conducted in forestry; natural resource management; turf, landscape, forage and weed sciences. WFREC faculty and staff are dedicated to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and extension programs which meet the needs of local clientele and could have state- and nation-wide as well as international impact. The center offers educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. WFREC offers opportunities for greenhouse, shade house, growth chamber and field research. Both WFREC locations are in rural communities in proximity to the resources relevant to the mission of the University of Florida. The location of WFREC allows the advantages of rural living while being within 30 minutes of Pensacola, one of Florida's major cities. Applicants should expect to spend a portion of their time in Gainesville as well as the WFREC.
