English 340: Power Grammar for Successful Writers (Pre-session and summer I

English 340: Power Grammar for Successful Writers (Pre-session and summer I
session English 340s will be taught by instructors who have English as a
Second Language teaching experience)
LEC 001 Summer I—June 4-July 5, MTWRF from 3:00pm-4:45pm

In this course, you will polish your grammar to make your writing more
powerful and more effective. It will also help you refine your style and
discover your voice through the help of reflective practices. During the
first part of the course, you will review punctuation rules, analyze
grammatical features, and consider stylistic elements such as sentence
structure and the lexicon. After studying model writing from diverse genres,
you will work toward creating a unique writing voice. You also will engage
in meta-writing to better understand your own development. You will write
short pieces on a daily basis and workshop your writing with fellow class
members, and you will complete several formal essays to demonstrate newly
acquired skills.

English 340: Writing in Academic Disciplines & Beyond (The summer II session
will be taught by an instructor who has experience with Writing in the
Disciplines and is currently a Carson Earth Fellowship scholar with the UA
Institute for the Environment.)
LEC 001 Summer II—July 9-August 8, MTWRF, 9:00am-10:45am

In this course, you will learn to become a more effective writer in your own
academic discipline. The course emphasizes: 1) writing specific academic
genres in your major; 2) development of argument, style, voice, and
rhetorical grammar appropriate to your discipline; and 3) reflection and
revision of your own professional-quality writing. During the first part of
the course, you will analyze academic genres in your field and learn to
identify and imitate those written genres. In the second half of the course,
you will hone reflective practices, work toward creating a unique writing
voice, and engage in meta-cognitive processes about your writing to better
understand your own writing development. Throughout this process, you will
analyze argumentative structures, grammatical features, and consider
stylistic elements such as sentence structure and the lexicon of your field.
Finally, you will write on a daily basis and workshop your writing with
fellow class members in your discipline. You can expect to produce several
longer documents that demonstrate your newly acquired skills.
