Hello everyone! Hope you had a wonderful Monday!
We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s SEED presentation titled “Insights and Lessons Learned: Uncovering Farmworkers’ Perspectives on Emerging Plant Biotechnologies with Sohinee Bera and Cristian Salazar De Leon.” Unlike typical SEED meetings, we are asking you to register<https://cornell.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAod-GrrzsiEtIwNxwfWL6H1_vkSbRcw0Gp> for this talk so Sohinee and Cristian can follow up with a post-talk survey. Please find the description for tomorrow’s talk below:
In Yuma County, Arizona, the agricultural industry heavily relies on Mexican citizens who come to work with temporary visas, commuting from Mexico across the international border. These individuals play a crucial role in the local farming community. By surveying them, we can gain valuable insights into how people in the agricultural sector and neighboring communities perceive the emerging plant technologies being developed by CROPPS. Their perspectives can help guide the application of these technologies in both domestic and international agricultural production. We conducted surveys during the Dia de los Campesinos event, an annual event for over 20 years in San Luis, AZ. This event brings together over 3,000 farmworkers and their families to provide free health services, immigration help, food, and cultural activities. This event provided a unique opportunity to collect data from this important stakeholder group, enhancing our understanding of their thoughts and needs regarding evolving agricultural technologies. In our presentation, we will share the research findings from our survey and reflect on the lessons learned from engaging with this specific stakeholder group.
Register now.<https://cornell.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAod-GrrzsiEtIwNxwfWL6H1_vkSbRcw0Gp>
Thank you so much!
Best,
Keenia

Bios:
Sohinee Bera is a second-year PhD Student in the Department of Communication at Cornell University. She is a first-year trainee in CROPPS, working with Bruce V. Lewenstein in the SEED theme. Within CROPPS, she is interested in evaluating and characterizing public engagement initiatives and understanding how these insights are incorporated back into research design and motivations. More broadly, her research explores how social and cultural mechanisms shape how people think about environmental issues, and to utilize those insights in culturally appropriate pro-environmental interventions.
Cristian Salazar De Leon is a fourth-year PhD Candidate in the School of Plant Sciences at The University of Arizona. He is a member of the CROPPS TLC and is working with Jesse Woodson in the iTOC theme. His research interests are to develop synthetic plant biotechnology tools that can be used to solve key agricultural challenges such as nitrogen and water usage efficiency. Within CROPPS, his research focuses on designing and implementing optogenetic switches that can be used to finetune gene expression in plants; with the long-term goal of implementing this technology in a programmable plant.
