Abstract:
Plants have immune signaling networks that include plasma membrane-localized receptors that detect microbial molecular patterns. Upon perception of these pattern molecules, plant cells initiate intracellular signaling that leads to induction of plant defense responses via a process called pattern-triggered immunity. These responses provide protection for plants against a variety of phytopathogens. Our lab studies components of the immune system found in tomato and other solanaceous plant species. Specifically, we study a receptor called FLS3, which detects a pattern from the bacterial flagellin protein. We identified one polymorphism in this pattern that renders the corresponding ligand inactive, and bacteria with this flagellin variant can cause more disease on tomato plants. We then characterized the recognition of flagellin in the two pepper species. We observed differential recognition of the flagellin ligand between the pepper species, and also that pepper plants inoculated with bacteria expressing different flagellin variants had differential susceptibility to infection. These results suggest that differences in the receptors lead to differential recognition of flagellin.
Bio:
Dr. Hind graduated in 2010 with a PhD in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology from the University of South Carolina-Columbia. Her faculty mentor is Dr. Johannes Stratmann. Her research focus is molecular plant-insect interactions in tomato. She was a P\postdoc for 1 year in PhD lab 2011-2017, Postdoc at Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University where her faculty mentor was Dr. Greg Martin and her research focus molecular plant-microbe interactions in tomato. She joined Department of Crop Sciences in 2017 as Assistant Professor where her research focus is elucidating the plant immune system and bacterial virulence mechanisms in solanaceous and cucurbit crops
Thank you and have a great day,
Keenia
