Dear Graduate Students,
We recently heard from an amazing student who did not receive the award for which she applied. While not getting an award seems normal to us in the Office of Fellowships, it is not normal for the person who put so much effort and time into the application. In our fellowship success stories<https://gradcenter.arizona.edu/gcof/tags/fellowship-success-stories>, we encourage the writers to talk about the times they did not get the award as well as when they did. Every single writer has had many “failures” before their “successes.” If you have not gotten awards in the past, we encourage you, when you find a good fit, to try again. You will become a stronger writer, make new connections, solidify your plans, and you might even get funded.
Shelley and Bethany

Sci-Founder Fellowship (PhD graduates and postdocs) for Startups
The Sci-Founder Fellowship program will help scientists create a startup company of their own, invest $400,000 per company, and mentor the founders. The ultimate goal is to get the teams to a stage where they can raise seed funding from investors on their own (we will introduce them to investors from our network). Sci-Founder will take equity in the formed entity but no ownership of any intellectual property. The IP will stay with the inventor/institution and is normally licensed from the institution to the formed company. We are not planning to go through a lengthy application process that involves business plan or pitch competitions, and the involvement of external mentors. We want to help scientists to get started right away to work on their ideas by offering sufficient start capital and hands on mentorship on how to build their company the right way.

UA Space Grant Graduate Fellowships
The UA/NASA Space Grant Program and nominating departments provide six graduate fellowships per year to exceptional graduate students interested in promoting the understanding of space-related research to the public and who are studying in space sciences/engineering, public policy, earth sciences, science education, and global change-related fields. Space Grant fellows are required to complete an educational outreach project as part of their fellowship. In keeping with National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program goals, Space Grant Fellows will develop a project that promotes the understanding of space-related research to the public. Successful applicants tend to establish a relationship with an organization or institution (i.e. a school, museum, park/forest, or an existing educational program) as they develop their outreach project proposal. It is essential that applicants identify an "educational outreach advisor" representing this organization or program who will provide an initial letter of support that indicates their willingness to cooperate with the applicant's proposal and help in evaluating the project during the fellowship period.
