[Plsgs] IMPORTANT information regarding funding and TA/RA positions

Good afternoon SPLS Grads-

In the past, the DGS worked with your primary advisor to determine your funding each semester. As the unit evolves and we consider how to best prepare the graduate students in SPLS to enter the workforce, it has become apparent that the power of these conversations should be placed with you, the student.  As a result, for all upcoming semesters, we will be following a timeline of events to allow for open communication between you and your PI to plan your funding. Please be sure to speak to your PI

The timeline:

  1.  Students will have until July 1st to communicate with their PI on their graduation plans, TA requirements, etc.
  2.  Students will communicate back to Amanda A and David Jacobson if they will be funded on an RA position or if they will be requesting a TA position
  3.  Administration will plot TA assignments, to be approved by the DGS
  4.  Offer letters will then be drafted and sent out to the students.

With this email, we are announcing the official call to speak with your faculty!

Some guidelines:

  *   Please consider that full graduate funding consists of 3 items: stipend, tuition, health insurance.  When you are hired as a TA or an RA all three are covered.
  *   If you will be funded by an RA, your faculty PI will need to provide you with an account number for your funding or work with the accounting team on your funding.  This must be completed by July 1st. .
  *   If you will be funded by a TA, your faculty supervisor will be the DGS and you will need to complete all training and language requirements.  You will need to sign up for a TA position using a form that will be sent out to you by June 27th.
  *   This is meant to assist the students in having these types of discussions- if you are having problems initiating a conversation, please reach out to Amanda Armendariz and David Jacobson so that we can work with you.

Please be sure to sign up for a TA position or advise on RA funding no later than July 1st.
