Dear SPLS grads, cc Drs. Mars and Moravec,
For those of you in the PhD programs, the following describes an opportunity to contribute to an interesting project here in CALS, just by offering to be interviewed. I hope you can consider participating, and please reach out to the researchers for more details as needed.
Best,
Shelley
Dear PhD students,
We are writing to invite you to participate in a research study on the academic preparation and socialization of PhD students in the plant sciences specific to the global climate crisis and in relation to academic, government, and industry conditions and contexts. We are conducting the study at The University of Arizona with a focus on PhD students from the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Engineering, and Science who have academic and/or professional interests that involve the environment and/or global climate change.
We would like to invite you to participate in our study if you are a doctoral student in the Department or Environmental Science with an academic and/or professional interest in the environment and/or global climate change. Participation entails a one-on-one interview that will explore the influence of academic, government, and industry contexts and interactions on your preparation as a scientist within an interest in the environment and/or global climate change. The interview should last no more than 1 hour and would be conducted over Zoom using a password protected link. If you are able to participate, we will work with you to schedule the interview on a date and time that is most convenient for you. The project’s findings will inform graduate education in science, engineering, and technology fields and contribute to the literature on graduate student socialization and preparation specific to global climate change and sustainability.
If you would choose to be interviewed, the information you share will be kept confidential and your name and other personally identifying information will not be associated with your comments or perceptions. Participation in this study is completely voluntary and your decision to participate or not participate will have no effect on your doctoral program of study or your relationship with your department and the University.
If you would like to participate in an interview or would like further details on our study, please contact Dr. Bryan Moravec via email at bmoravec at arizona.edu<mailto:bmoravec at arizona.edu> or by phone at (520) 626-1307. An Institutional Review Board responsible for research that involves the participation of human subjects at The University of Arizona reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best Regards,
Bryan Moravec, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Research Specialist, Department of Environmental Sciences
Matthew Mars, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Agricultural Education, Technology and Innovation
