Hi all,
I wanted to reach out to you in regards to public speaking opportunities. I
know there are some groups on campus, such as Toastmasters (though they
meet at 6 am or something and I think they cost to join). However, I was
wondering if you all would want something more specific and free.
I was wondering if you would be interested in having a grad student only
lab meeting once a week for about 45 minutes to an hour where someone could
tell us what they want to work on in their presentation skills (or just
want to present in general). We would then watch them present on their
research and help them develop the skill (count ums, weird movements, etc).
I plan on keeping this to grad students only as I believe professors add a
level of intimidation and make us feel like our presentation must be good
quality with no room for error. Though a group with profs may be advertised
as informal, it never really gets that feel.
I understand the benefits to groups such as WIP because sometimes you need
other insight from seasoned pros in the plant field. However, for the
purpose of this group, I want to make sure people who don't have an
opportunity to speak have a chance as WIP can be hard to join if a PI
doesn't want to go to the meeting. Also, I want to hear about what everyone
else does and kind of build a deeper grad student connection among us :)
Let me know what you think!
Thank you!
David Welsh
