The Graduate Center and the Office of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement are hosting workshops for graduate students on the subjects of mentoring and mitigating unconscious bias on October 11 and 25, respectively. The workshops are free and include lunch for in-person attendees. In-person seats are limited to 24, but students can also attend online via Zoom. The Graduate Center and the Office of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement are excited to announce our upcoming workshops for graduate students, "Making the Most out of Mentoring" on October 11 and "Mitigating Unconscious Bias: What Graduate Students Can Do" on October 25. The workshops are free. Lunch is provided, and space is limited to 24 in-person participants. We will also have an option for people to attend remotely through Zoom. Registration is required. Research finds that there are good practices that increase the impact of mentoring, while there are also practices that can hinder mentoring.  This workshop - applicable for either mentors or mentees - will provide research-based strategies for getting the most out of your mentoring relationships.

October 25, 12 PM to 1:30 PM - Mitigating Unconscious Bias: What Graduate Students Can Do

As a graduate student, you have multiple roles. Sometimes you're the subordinate, while other times you are the lead. Navigating these situations can be challenging, and the impact of unconscious bias may make the outcomes more difficult or less effective. While unconscious bias is not intentionally malicious, it can certainly get in the way of our best efforts to promote and leverage the benefits of diversity as well as the impact of the work we do. This workshop will examine how unconscious bias can influence the workplace and classroom and how graduate students can respond. We will share research-based strategies for addressing unconscious biases and micro-aggressions, and we will explore strategies that reduce the impact of our own unconscious biases.
