Subject: Travel Grants for All Grad Students
Dear graduate students,
Every single graduate and professional student at the University of Arizona is eligible for the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) Travel Grants<https://gpsc.arizona.edu/travel-grants>.
One of the best things you can do to develop your grant writing skills is to apply for these grants and to volunteer to be a judge for the grants.
I asked Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson to provide more information about this opportunity.
Travel Grants for Graduate Students
Hi! My name is Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson, and I'm the Grants Director for the Graduate and Professional Students' Council (GPSC). I wanted to let you know about our biggest, most widely-used program: the Travel Grants!
The GPSC Travel Grants can be used to fund any kind of travel related to your academic career or professional development. Mostly, we fund requests to support travel to conferences, national meetings, workshops, and symposia. But there are lots of other potential uses for these grants. GPSC Travel Grants can be used to fund travel to participate in a performance, conduct archival research, collect data, and more!
Our goal is for GPSC Travel Grants to support the travel needs of all graduate and professional students, so if you've got travel plans related to your academic or professional goals, you're a good candidate for this award.
We offer up to $750 for domestic travel, and up to $1000 for international travel.
Our first round of applications for the GPSC Travel Grant opened on September 1st. Each round is open for a month, so applications for this first round are due October 1st, by 11:59pm AZ time. There will be three other application cycles this academic year (dates TBD).
One of the best things about our Travel Grants program is that you can request funding for travel that occurs at any point during the same fiscal year as your application. What does that mean exactly? The university's fiscal year runs from July 1st to June 30th of the following year (so, 07/01/2018 to 06/30/2019 in this case). Let's say you conducted fieldwork in late July 2018-you're eligible to apply for a GPSC Travel Grant in any of the four rounds between now and May 2019. What about if you have a conference coming up in February 2019? You can submit an application for the September round, in advance of your travel; or you can submit to one of the spring rounds after your travel is complete. In short, there's a lot of flexibility as far as when you can apply for different travel dates.
The GPSC Travel Grants website has details about eligibility, polices, and more:
https://gpsc.arizona.edu/travel-grants.
GPSC Travel Grants are competitive, and not a guaranteed source of funding. On our webpage you can also access the rubric that judges use to evaluate your application; I highly recommend using it to help prepare your proposal to increase your chances of being funded.
All of the judging for the GPSC Grants is done by your peers-other graduate and professional students at the U of A. Please consider volunteering as a judge. The judging process is fully online and, in total, takes less than three hours. It is an easy way to give back to your scholarly community (and earn a nice service line on your CV or resume!) without getting up from your couch. More importantly, it's a great way to get an insider's perspective on the grant evaluation process.
Students often express that serving as a judge helps them improve their own grant applications-for GPSC grants, and other, bigger funding opportunities!
If you're interested in serving as a judge, send us an email at gpscfunding at email.arizona.edu<mailto:gpscfunding at email.arizona.edu>. No special training or background is required.
If you have any other questions, comments, or concerns about the GPSC Travel Grants program, let me know by sending us an email: gpscfunding at email.arizona.edu<mailto:gpscfunding at email.arizona.edu>.
We also offer walk in Office Hours in Room 323C of the Student Union: Mondays from 3pm-5pm, and Wednesdays from 10am-12pm and 3pm-5pm. I, or the GPSC Funding Administrator, Kayla Worthey, will be happy to answer your questions!
