SafeRide is a free transportation service for University of Arizona affiliates. Since 1981, SafeRide has provided a nighttime alternative to walking alone on campus and in the Tucson community. It is managed and operated entirely by students under the sponsorship of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA). As an academic service, SafeRide’s mission is to serve those going to or from campus, while also providing a friendly and official presence on the streets at night.

Dancing with the Dean on the Green Fall 2015
Did you know that when Dr. Andrew Carnie, Dean of the Graduate College, isn’t studying linguistics or leading a team investigating the syntax, phonology and phonetics of Modern Scottish Gaelic, writing articles and books, or overseeing the Graduate College he is most likely off doing international folk dancing or square dancing?

That’s right! And now - back by popular demand - he invites you to attend his event, Dancing with the Dean on the Green. This is a great opportunity to interact with Dean Carnie in a relaxed setting, learn fun dances, and meet other UA graduate students.

Classroom Assessment Techniques: Do You Know What Your Students are Learning?
Ingrid Novodvorsky, Director of Teaching, Learning & Assessment
Date: Thursday, 11/5/2015
Time: 4pm-5pm
Venue: Student Union, Santa Cruz Room (level 3)

Assessing what your students are learning during class sessions can be a powerful guide for your teaching and their learning. And these assessment techniques don’t have to be cumbersome or time-consuming. In this session, you will experience several simple, powerful assessment techniques and leave ready to apply them in your course.

Workshop #5:
Effective Grading: Viable Practice to Help Students Learn
Mascha N. Gemein, Assistant Professor of Practice
Date: Thursday, 11/12/2015
Time: 4pm-5pm
Venue: Student Union, Presidio Room (level 4)

Grading can present many challenges. Effectiveness often depends on clarifying your role as a TA, communicating assignment-specific grading criteria, making good choices during the grading, and giving your students a framework to process and apply your feedback. This interactive workshop will explore each of these aspects and aim at formulating strategies that allow you and your students to engage effectively with graded assessments as a practice that is both viable and supports learning.

Upcoming Campus Connection Workshop
For Research & Publishing:
Getting Published: Unraveling the Book Publishing Process: Monday, Nov 9, 10:00-11:30 a.m., Haury Anthropology 129, RSVP required<https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_dnihVf5D1ZtPZJz>: diversity.arizona.edu/getting-published-workshops
Editors from the University of Arizona Press will offer critical insights into the book publishing process. From tips on crafting an effective book proposal to navigating the changing landscape of digital publication and Open Access, speakers will share their expertise on critical aspects of writing, submitting work to, and working with a university press. In the evaluations from the same workshop last spring, 100% of respondents agreed that they benefited from the workshop.

Protecting Your Students from Unconscious Bias & Micro-Aggressions: Wednesday, November 4, 3:30-5:00, Social Sciences 206, RSVP required<https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8kKbTUyzeFAgDFH>: diversity.arizona.edu/diversity-workshops
Given increasingly diverse classrooms, how can instructors and teaching assistants protect students from unconscious bias and micro-aggressions? Unconscious bias is pervasive, with nearly all people displaying unintended biases towards certain groups. After a brief introduction to the research, we will consider strategies for addressing students’ unconscious biases and micro-aggressions and offer teaching and assessment strategies that reduce the impact of our own unconscious biases.
