March 2012 GradFunding Newsletter

Dissertation Support

This March GradFunding newsletter includes the following:

1. Introduction to dissertation support

2. Current funding opportunities (internships, general funding
opportunities, dissertation support, and post-doctoral opportunities)

3. Upcoming workshops

An Introduction to Dissertation Support

The dissertation writing stage can be difficult in many ways for graduate
students (and everyone in their immediate vicinity). This newsletter will
give an overview of where to find financial help, for other kinds of
assistance please contact your adviser, friends, family, priest, rabbi, or
psychologist.

1. How do I begin finding financial assistance?

o Start by sitting down and asking yourself what you need to successfully
write your dissertation. Consider all of the resources you need. For
example, you might need books, time, space, money for rent, responses from
your advisers, cooperation from a local nonprofit, to recruit research
subjects, to get access to a lab, etc.

o Next, consider all the help that you have or could get. Perhaps you have
contacts who can help you get the lab access you need or you might have a
study carrel in the library.

o Then look at what you lack.

o The goal here is to show yourself that you do not need money per say to
write a dissertation; you need resources. Chances are that money will you
obtain the resources you lack, but dissertation funding (unlike fellowships
available to graduate students earlier in their careers) rarely covers
living expenses; rather than funding you as a researcher, the money usually
funds your work. Instead, when you apply for dissertation funding, you need
to show how the funds will help you successfully write a dissertation.

2. What are the big names in dissertation funding?

*	Internal UA Funding: See opportunities at:
http://grad.arizona.edu/financial-resources/ua-resources/meritorious-awards
*	National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants
(NSF DDIG): The deadlines come up through directorates. For an informational
workshop on applying to NSF DDIGs, see workshop information at the end of
this email.
*	American Association of University Women: The AAUW provides
dissertation support for women:
http://www.aauw.org/learn/fellowships_grants/american.cfm
*	PEO: Local PEO chapters can nominate women for dissertation
fellowships. If you have a connection to a PEO chapter in your hometown,
then inquire about the possibility of a nomination from them.
*	Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship: If you can contribute to
the Ford Foundation's mission to increase the diversity of American
universities and colleges, consider their fellowship:
http://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/fordfellowships/
*	National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship: For
dissertations focused on improving education:
http://naeducation.org/NAEd_Spencer_Dissertation_Fellowship.html
*	Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program: Yes.
According to reliable rumors, the Fulbright-Hays lives on and this year's
competition will be announced soon! The Fulbright-Hays funds international
research in non-European countries. Please contact Shelley Hawthorne Smith
(ssmith at grad.arizona.edu) if you are interested in this opportunity.

3. What other resources are there for dissertation funding?

*	Columbia University School of Social Work has a wide-ranging list of
funding sources for all disciplines:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ssw/phdprogram/financial/dissertation_funding.htm
l

o Boston College has a long list of dissertation support sources (keep
scrolling down for a list organized by deadlines):

http://www.bc.edu/research/osp/funding/external/dissuport/

4. Consider updating your IRIS and COS alerts (please be getting these)
for "dissertation and research" funding. You can also search these sites - a
cursory dissertation and research search on IRIS produced almost 700
results.

5. Where can I get help applying for dissertation funding?

The Writing Skills Improvement Program's Summer Graduate Writing Institute
is an excellent resource for many writing projects, including applying for
dissertation funding:

http://wsip.web.arizona.edu/gwi.htm

6. What if I do not succeed in obtaining funding?

Stay tuned for next month's edition of GradFunding!
