Please circulate the announcement below to eligible Seniors, First Year
Graduate Students and beginning Second Year Graduate Students who are
seeking a research-based master's or doctoral degree in fields of science
and engineering supported by the NSF.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Solicitation

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to
help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering
workforce in the United States. The program recognizes and supports
outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and
doctoral degrees in fields within NSF's mission. The GRFP provides three
years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have
demonstrated their potential for significant achievements in science and
engineering research.
Estimated Number of Awards: 2,000 new Fellowships will be offered pending
availability of funds.
Anticipated Funding Amount: Each Fellowship consists of three years of
support usable over a five- year period. For each year of support, NSF
provides a stipend of $30,000 to the Fellow and a cost-of-education
allowance of $10,500 to the degree-granting institution. For 2012, it is
anticipated that the cost-of-education allowance will increase to $12,000,
as indicated in the FY2012 Budget Request.
Eligibility: The Fellowship is for persons at the beginning states of
graduate study and research in fields funded by the National Science
Foundation.
. Applicants must be United States citizens, nationals, or permanent
residents of the United States by the application deadline.
. Fellowships are awarded for graduate study leading to
research-based master's and doctoral degrees in the fields of science and
engineering supported by the National Science Foundation (See Fields of
Study, Appendix and the NSF Proposal and Awards Policies and Procedures
Guide, NSF 11-1 <http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=papp>
).
. Applicants are generally Undergraduate Seniors, First Year
Graduate Students, or 2nd Year Graduate Students with no more than 12 months
of full-time graduate study in any field by Aug. 1, 2011.
