Dear colleagues,

As many are aware, a tragedy occurred late yesterday at the Marley Building. I am writing to offer my support and care for all members of our Plant Sciences community. Traumatic events affect each of us in different ways. It is a time for collegiality, mutual support, and care for one another. Please join me in coming together for our community at this time.

I have received permission at this point to communicate with our faculty as a group, and I would like to share some information and ask for your help in checking in with your students, colleagues, office neighbors, staff, and others in your circle.

• At this time the investigation is ongoing. UAPD will work to rule out foul play and to identify the victim.

• Should a student be involved, the Dean of Students will work to notify next of kin, as well as roommates, friends, coworkers, classmates, and others who may be affected directly by this loss and connect them with support services.

• The priority at this time is to connect faculty, staff, and students with support services. In addition to 988, the crisis line available 24/7, please see the list below.

I am on site today in Forbes 303C and my door is open. My personal phone number is (520) 396-0854. If I can't pick up right away I will call back at the earliest opportunity.

Finally, in light of recent events we will not hold a formal faculty meeting this Friday. Instead, I will welcome all unit members for an informal gathering at 11am, with refreshments provided as a gesture of my appreciation for the strength and kindness that abounds in our unit. This may change should more information come to light that warrants a change of course. For now, please stay tuned for a formal invitation and I will be in touch.

Going forward, I aim to keep up communication on faculty-related and unit-related matters and will connect across our unit as those on nine-month appointments, and others with summer plans, look ahead to the time from now to August.

I am grateful to you all for the work you do, and I appreciate you all as colleagues.

My warmest regards,
Betsy
