[Plsfaculty] Associate Director positions: call for nominations and applications

Dear faculty:

I am pleased to inform you that the Dean has approved the search for, and appointment of, four associate directors, to continue an effective administrative structure for our complex School.  I have been directed to:


  1.  Send an email to all SPLS faculty with a position description for each associate position, letting them know that these positions are open for nomination/application, including a proposed supplementary stipend of $20,000 p.a.
  2.  Collect nominations/applications (these are due by COB on Thursday January 4, 2024), which should be brief paragraphs relaying that person's experience, how it relates to the position descriptions, and any other creative ideas that might improve the effectiveness of these positions, and of the administrative structure of the School.
  3.  Provide a means to recommend candidates for appointment to these positions.

Position Descriptions


1.              Associate for faculty and student advancement.

Responsible for providing top-level advice and procedures to facilitate the process of identifying new faculty for recruitment to the SPLS, and for the onboarding of candidates offered positions. Responsible for suggesting solutions to handle emerging problems associated with faculty-faculty and faculty-student interactions, and in providing innovative means to cultivate an atmosphere of mutual respect within the School.


2.              Associate for infrastructure development and maintenance.

Responsible for coordination of all aspects of maintenance of existing SPLS infrastructure, including buildings and instrumentation, and effectively handling issues with Facilities Management.  Responsible for coordinating funding proposals to lead to acquisition of new instruments and facilities that advance the plant sciences in innovative directions.


3.              Associate for outreach and extension.

Responsible for promotion and direction of all SPLS activities in the twin areas of extension and outreach, providing effective and expanded communication between statewide stakeholders and the School, and articulating the needs of extension as reflected in appointment of successful extension faculty and agents.


4.              Associate for educational activities.

Responsible for promotion and direction of all SPLS pedagogical activities in the classroom, employing and evaluating new teaching modalities, enhancing collaborative activities across the educational spectrum, and working to acquire funding to enhance our teaching mission.
