[Plsfaculty] FW: Summer/Fall changes to library resources in D2L courses

Dear colleagues who offer courses through D2L,

In case the email I'm forwarding (below) slipped by your notice when it was sent in April, I'd like to draw your attention to it and to recommend taking a look at the new Library Guide in your D2L sites.

Where you used to have a "Library Tools" tab in D2L, you should now have a "Library Guide" tab. The CALES liaison librarian, Jeanne Pfander<mailto:Pfander,%20Jeanne%20L%20-%20(jpfander)%20%3cjpfander at arizona.edu%3e> (click to send email), created a 'generic' Plant Sciences guide<https://libguides.library.arizona.edu/plant-sciences> that is the default in our PLS courses and which may already have good resources for your students depending on your course. If not, Jeanne can customize the items that appear there so that students have a direct link to any online library or external resource you'd like them to use for reference in the course.

For my Industrial Biotechnology course, the Plant Science guide was far from the mark so Jeanne created the customized Industrial Biotechnology guide<https://libguides.library.arizona.edu/pls434_534/introduction>, which my students will access through the tab in D2L. If you click through the menu options on the left, you can see that Jeanne copied over my "optional course readings" list from my syllabus, with direct links to the recommended books. She also provided a link to the UA library search engine and to specialized databases, including PubMed.

I'm very impressed with the result and think it dresses up my D2L site nicely, which is why I wanted to recommend it to all of you.

Best regards,
Samantha

Background

Beginning with Fall 2024 courses, there will be a new link to library resources and support as part of the top navigation for all D2L courses. This new tab will be titled "Library Guide" and replaces the previous "Library Tools" tab.

These changes will go into effect on May 10, 2024, for upcoming courses. Over the next few months, these navigational changes will appear in historic courses going back two years. This will allow instructors to copy previous courses for a new semester or summer/winter session with the changes in place.

You can also access information about this change in our Library Resources in D2L guide<https://libguides.library.arizona.edu/library-guide>.

What is the Library Guide tab?

This tool automatically provides a library guide relevant to your course in the D2L top navbar. This may be a subject-specific guide such as the American Indian Studies<https://libguides.library.arizona.edu/american-indian-studies> guide. Or it might be a guide designed by a library expert for a specific course. For example, an ENGL 596 course will be directed to the ENGL 596 guide<https://libguides.library.arizona.edu/ENGL596> with subject-specific resources for articles, books, journals, and media. No linking or selecting content is required by the instructor.

What about the prior Library Tools tab?

Previously, most D2L courses had a Library Tools tab. This tab was generated from a locally developed program that has reached the end of its useful life. The Library Guide will replace this content.

How do I request changes to the content in my course's Library Guide?

If you would like a more specialized course guide for your class, please reach out to your liaison librarian<https://lib.arizona.edu/about/contact/your-librarian>. Please allow at least 3 weeks advance notice.

After May 10th, I still don't see a Library Guide tab for my summer and fall courses. How do I add it?

If after the mid-May rollout, your Fall or Summer 2024 course is missing the "Library Guide" tab in the top navigation, please contact Jen Church-Duran at jchurchduran at arizona.edu<mailto:jchurchduran at arizona.edu> for help.

How do my students access library licensed course eBooks now?

  * Students in Main Campus courses can find library ebooks in the "Content" section of their D2L course - via VitalSource's Bookshelf.
[cid:image007.png at 01DA8A71.B1FB60B0]

  * All students can access any course's unlimited-licensed ebook provided by the library through our new Course Ebooks website<https://libguides.library.arizona.edu/er.php?b=c>, and these can be searched by book title, instructor, course, or term.
  * This link will also appear in most "Library Guides" for courses.

Please contact Leslie Sult at lsult at arizona.edu<mailto:lsult at arizona.edu> or Jennifer Church-Duran at jchurchduran at arizona.edu<mailto:jchurchduran at arizona.edu> if you have any questions or concerns.
