[Plsfaculty] Beckman Scholars Program: Call for Faculty Applications

Dear Plant Sciences Faculty,


We would like to invite interested faculty members to apply to be a UArizona Beckman Mentor!


In a couple of months, we will be submitting a renewal grant for the Beckman Scholars Program. We can have up to 15 Beckman mentors as part of our application, we would like to reach that maximum in order to provide students with more options and expertise in the program. You must be a full-time, tenured/tenure-track faculty member whose home department is either MCB, EEB, CBC or Plant Sciences in order to apply.


The University of Arizona has been awarded a Beckman Scholars Program Award 7 times since 2000. Each award spans 3 years and provides funding for 6 scholar/mentor pairs per award.

The Beckman Scholars Program, funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, provides a total student stipend of $18,200 plus $2,800 for research supplies and travel support over the course of the 15-month experience. Two Beckman Scholars will be selected annually and those scholars will only be allowed to work with a UA Beckman Mentor during their time in the program. The selected mentor will also receive $5,000 to cover the cost of research supplies. The UArizona Beckman Scholars Program gives undergraduates funding and support to conduct in-depth research on a full-time basis for two consecutive summers, and part-time during the intervening academic year. UArizona Beckman Scholars work on a project of interest in their selected mentor’s lab, engage in professional development activities, such as leading undergraduates in small group discussions, inviting and hosting an eminent scientist to give a seminar at UArizona, meeting with Beckman Mentors, and serving as student leaders within the Undergraduate Biology Research Program, etc.

The main selection criteria we will abide by in selecting Beckman mentors will be the strength of the mentoring statement, evidence of past effective mentoring with undergraduate researchers (e.g., papers, awards, other notable achievements), and evidence of current grant funding.



To be considered as a Beckman Mentor, please complete the two attached forms (CV and Mentoring Statement) - include your surname at the start of the filename. The latter document is something you are obligated to write anyway when accepting a Beckman Mentor student into your lab, so the hope is this can save everyone time later on. For now, write this statement in terms of how you would mentor any Beckman student joining your lab (you can minimally edit this later if/when a specific student is joining your lab).
