Subject: Nominations for Review Committee Members--Five Year Review of Vice President, Division of Agriculture, Life & Veterinary Sciences, & Cooperative Extension/Charles-Sander Dean of the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences, Shane C. Burgess
Forwarded on behalf of Provost Ronald W. Marx.
Dear Colleagues,
We are initiating the five-year review of Shane Burgess, Vice President for the Division of Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension, and the Charles-Sander Dean of the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences. As you may know, administrators participate in a comprehensive performance assessment every five years. A five-year review is not required nor anticipated if an administrator will not be renewed in accordance with the process outlined in UHAP 5.4<https://policy.arizona.edu/employmenthuman-resources/suspensions-and-terminations-administrative-appointments>. Shared governance is a key element of the five-year review process. As such, I am seeking your help in identifying faculty, staff, and students from CALES and the Division of Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension (ALVSCE) who can serve on the committee. I have already enlisted Iman Hakim, Dean, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, to chair this committee and oversee the review process.
Per UHAP 5.3.02<https://policy.arizona.edu/employmenthuman-resources/five-year-reviews-administrative-personnel>, the general faculty of the college nominate at least eight tenure- and nontenure-track (or career-track) faculty and continuing-status professionals to serve on the review committee. This also includes two faculty members from outside the college. These nominees comprise half of the review committee as specified in the Guidelines for Shared Governance Memorandum of Understanding<https://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/shared-governance-ua>. In addition, the Provost will also appoint additional faculty members, continuing-eligible, or continuing-status academic professional employees from the college concerned or elsewhere, along with representatives from the following groups: students, University Staff, and Academic or Service Professional employees, or community representatives. An effort will be made to represent all areas of the college.
Please click here<https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7UrpXuhcmgo215s> to provide us your nominations for review committee members by or before Friday, October 20 at 5:00 p.m.
The review will also include, but not be limited to, an assessment of the performance of the administrator in the following areas:
1. Building trust by communicating a guiding vision, operating in an ethical manner, being accessible and responsive, maintaining composure, and acknowledging the lessons to be learned from missteps.
2. Fostering collaboration by effectively managing conflicts, forging partnerships, and advancing shared purposes in a manner that includes diverse perspectives in collaborative decision making.
3. Maximizing resources by recruiting and retaining high quality coworkers, helping them develop through coaching and assessment, improving operational effectiveness, and advancing data-based planning.
4. Achieving results by identifying opportunities, challenging received assumptions, taking strategic risks, and advancing innovations in a decisive and strategic manner that is attuned to the priorities of the unit and university.
5. Inclusive excellence by embedding diversity, inclusivity, and equity into the structural/institutional aspects of the unit, which may include recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body, fostering access to opportunity within the unit, encouraging diverse perspectives, and creating a welcoming and supportive campus climate through visibility, communication, and education.
Detailed guidelines for the implementation of the five-year review process can be found here<https://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/administrative-reviews>. In general, the following process will be used for the five-year review:
1. The administrator self-study is shared with the review committee.
2. An administrator review survey is distributed to faculty, staff, and relevant constituents (e.g., students, collaborators, and stakeholders).
3. The committee is also available to meet with individuals or small groups upon request.
4. The review committee prepares a report that is shared with the supervisor.
5. The supervisor meets with the administrator to share results and agree on steps for dissemination of repeat outcomes.
6. Administrator shares the results of the review with faculty, staff, and relevant constituents.
Thank you in advance for participating in this process to enhance the quality and excellence of CALES and ALVSCE and to foster the growth and development of leadership capacity of Dean Burgess.
With thanks,
Ron
