If your faculty wish to make an honorary degree nomination this year, please have the packet to Shane no later than Tuesday, November 7.

Nomination packets must include:

  1.  Nominee's CV/resume.
  2.  Biographical sketch of maximum 500 words indicating why the award is appropriate.

  *   This statement should focus on the significance of the nominee's work, drawing clear and particular attention to the nominee's connection to the University, the Tucson community, and/or the State of Arizona.
  *   Demonstrating national or global impact of the nominee's work will strengthen nominations.
  *   Please note that if your nomination is successful, the statement read by the dean when presenting the candidate at Commencement or an off-cycle ceremony will be drawn directly from this biographical sketch.
We have a number of steps to take at the college/division level, including a division-wide faculty meeting and preparing a cover memo from the VP/dean -- and we need to provide faculty a week's notice for the meeting.  The 2023-24 Nominations / Summary of Procedures document linked above outlines the steps that happen after a nomination goes forward to the university.

Lastly, please be sure to maintain absolute confidentiality about any nominations you are preparing.  There will need to be faculty and perhaps some staff involved in the process of preparing a nomination, but it is very important that the nominee and any others outside your unit don't hear about an honorary degree that may not be awarded in the end.
