Is there some way we could all learn (or maybe it’s known) what scholarships and such fund the first year program and what are used for other things? A bunch of that first year money is CALS money too though, right?

Maybe that a good topic for next faculty meeting?

Hi Dr. Baltrus,

To answer your question, it is just one application that students submit through Scholarship Universe. There is a survey in the beginning and based on the answers students provide, students are paired with multiple scholarships. In short, after April 1st , Camille Andersen with CALS Career and Academic Services, meets with department representatives to provide information about all the applicants and their cover letters. The department representative is also part of the SPLS scholarship committee and is a liaison to the committee. Finally, the SPLS scholarship committee reviews the applicants makes sure that they do meet the criteria of the scholarships and selects recipients.

Please know that these are a different set of scholarships that fund our first-year grad program. Those are still managed entirely by SPLS and are not available through Scholarship Universe. I hope this clarifies any confusion.

Hi all,

Very likely I missed one or more pieces of information, but is there a place that explains what scholarships are available to who (maybe this is the survey that’s step 1 of the process)?

Also, when I go to the landing page for what scholarships are available for plant sciences, a bunch of the PLS/PLP endowments are listed. Are these competitive now? IIRC, the money for these would just go where it went by a mysterious allocation process.

Again, apologies if I’m just missing info but I had no clue that there were competitive grad student endowment funds now…if that’s the case.
