Dear PLS faculty:
I am writing to alert you to a coordinated effort to utilize space in a more efficient manner, relating specifically to Forbes 233, and to be implemented by Christopher Portugay-Delaney as building manager. We would like all PLS personnel associated with Forbes 233 to claim their belongings located in this space. Inappropriate storage of items in Forbes 233 has resulted in identification of fire hazards and adverse effects on room cooling systems and equipment (see below for examples). Generally, this space has become a hazard to faculty, staff, and students.
In an effort to clean up the space, we are requesting the members of our unit that utilize this space find other places to store some of these items. For example, there are various boxes and items placed above or directly next to the growth chambers. Items on top of the growth chambers are prohibited by the fire marshal due to the clearance requirements for fire suppression systems. Items next to the chamber restrict the airflow around the chambers causing issues and strain to the cooling systems used by these machines to control the environments contained within them. It is also causing direct harm to the machines to crowd them with dirt, dust and trash.
In another example, the fermentation lab is beginning to finish up renovations in Forbes 235 and we now must revitalize this space. The potting room once housed in Forbes 235 has been converted to a new wet lab space. This means it is important to clear table space in 233 to provide replacement potting surfaces to conduct plant research. Currently the stainless steel tables in 233 are covered with light fixtures, the machines are surrounded by items, and the corners of all these rooms are crowded. Please claim and remove these items.
Christopher Portugay-Delaney will be the main point of contact to reach out to during the next 3 weeks to ensure all your items have been claimed and safely relocated. He can be reached at (520) 603-2919. He will assist with bad bulb disposal, surplus of items no longer necessary, and the general cleanup of the space. Any unclaimed or untagged items at the end of this timeframe will be subject to removal. If you have questions or concerns about this process, please reach out to Christopher or me.
Please inform your staff and students of this process.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Thank you.
David Galbraith
