Hi all:

We will shortly be distributing SPLS 23-24 committee assignments to the faculty. I thought you should know the procedure employed to formulate these assignments. Please also note that service is an integral part of your contract as an employee of the University of Arizona. More than that, service is a critical facet of academic life, since it not only provides the "glue" that holds together the community of scholars within our unit, but also it represents unique opportunities for self-driven academic exploration directed at the continuous improvement of our educational mission.

This means that all faculty are expected to provide service, unless on approved leave-of-absence from the unit. To achieve equitable distribution of service responsibilities, the following steps were followed:

  1. An email was circulated by Dr. Arnold to determine which service assignments you would prefer. These preferred assignments were used as the starting point for populating the committees. Based on feedback, some new committees were formed, and others eliminated.
  2. In the interest of fairness, a general rule was applied that senior faculty should provide a greater service contribution than more junior faculty, with incoming faculty expected to contribute the lowest initial level of service. This effectively aims at a 3:2:1 service load reflecting Full:Associate:Assistant status.
  3. Some committees are recognized as having UA- or CALES-mandated requirements concerning membership. This would include seniority status for members of committees involved in promotion and tenure, and membership of the various committees based on addressing subject-specific (e.g. microbiology) or mission-specific (Extension, teaching) areas.
  4. Some committees were recognized as having a higher intrinsic workloads than others.
  5. Issues of diversity in representation were noted and accommodated wherever possible. Consideration was also made of time of service on specific committees, to allow some turn-over in assigned responsibilities.
  6. Draft committee membership rosters were circulated for comments to the EC, and some adjustments made after discussion. This is what will be circulated to you for your input.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments regarding this procedure.

Best wishes!

David
