Dear SPLS faculty,
In early 2021, the University embarked on an overhaul of the general education curriculum. One result of this is that all existing general education courses must be adjusted/revamped and reapproved by a university committee for them to fulfill the general education requirements for students who matriculated in Spring 2022 or beyond*. Another important change is that now up to 9 course credits can be 'double-dipped' and count towards both the general education requirement and major/minor/elective credits. The university has been accepting applications for revamped/new general education courses in waves and just announced that the next submission window for applications will open around March 2023 and that informational workshops will start this month to help instructors prepare their applications.
If you would like to know more about applying to have one of your existing courses qualify as a general education course, or if you have an idea for a new general education course, you may contact me for guidance (see also: https://ge.arizona.edu/instructor-hub/ge-course-proposals). A course does NOT have to be a 100- or 200-level course to be considered for the new general education program but it should be a course that would not require pre-requisites and that either approaches a topic from multiple viewpoints ('building connections') or helps students understand how natural scientists approach the world ('exploring perspectives').
-Samantha
[*Two of our unit's four pre-existing general education courses have gone through this process; in addition, another course (Shelley's PLS 307) has become a general education course that is eligible for double dipping. We have plans to complete the process for the remaining two pre-existing general education courses.]
