In centrifugal microfluidics, the hydrostatic pressure pump is generated natively during rotation. In the design, when fluid from a main reservoir is propelled by centrifugal forces through a microchannel, the liquid encounters a resistance. This in turn causes localized pressure shifts to be seen along the microchannel. The phenomenon can thus be utilized as a novel valving technique. By placing an axillary conduit at a critical level along the microchannel the pressure differences can be used to prime siphoning features from additional reservoirs. The valve is the first passive method that can withstand high frequency rotation and withhold liquids until directly needed.
