1. Steve Rounsley will be joining the Department this fall as a
tenure-eligible Associate Professor. Rod Wing and I will serve as his
mentors. Steve will be participating in teaching a graduate level Genetics
course in alternate years. This course will be team taught with Rod and/or
Rich, depending on their availability. Steve will continue to be housed in
Bio5. Please join me in congratulating him on this milestone.
2. Dr. David Rhoads will be joining the Department in mid-May as an
Associate Research Professor. David is well-funded and will cover his salary
and laboratory operations expenses from grants. His research is centered on
retrograde signaling in mitochondria. In addition, he is funded, along with
Vicki, to move biotech, genomics and iPlant into AZ high schools. He will
have a small teaching appointment in the Department. At present the plan is
to house him in laboratory and office space on the 8th floor of Marley. That
is open to change depending on the input from you. If you would like to meet
with David for a short while on Friday afternoon, please advise.
I thank the Dean and his staff for supporting these two positions.
3. The Department is going to return to a core of courses for all of our
graduate students. GPOC will be considering the appropriate courses for each
degree in PLP and PLS late this week or early next week. Please take time to
talk to Karen or one of the members of the committee if you have an opinion
on this subject. More on this later.
