Bacterial Wilt: Global Movement, Unexpected Hosts, and Innovative Solutions

Bacterial wilt, caused by a species complex with a broad and poorly understood host range, is easily spread through propagative cuttings. With an estimated 4 billion cuttings imported annually into the US alone, globalization of agriculture drives movement of pathogens to new environments, leading to unpredictable outbreaks. This risk is further heightened by global warming, enabling establishment in previously unsuitable areas. This talk will explore the global movement of the bacterial wilt pathogen, focusing on genetically diverse populations identified in pothos, geranium, mandevilla, blueberry, and rose. It will also discuss ways to mitigate outbreaks, including identifying genes associated with pathogen survival and developing resistant crop varieties. Finally, it will address the threats posed by globalization and climate change in facilitating pathogen spread and disease emergence. By understanding the complex dynamics of bacterial wilt spread and evolution, we can work towards mitigating outbreaks in a globalized world.

Thank you and have a great day,
