Subject: Beckman Scholar program - invitation to PS faculty

Dear Dr Brown,

I am the faculty lead for the Beckman Scholars Program, which Quinn Reilly and Jennifer Cubeta (UBRP) jointly run with me. This program funds research for expectational undergraduates in the fields of Biology and Chemistry. Details below:

https://www.beckman-foundation.org/programs/beckman-scholars/ (General program overview reminder)

https://ubrp.arizona.edu/programs/beckman-scholars-program (UA-specific page for current Beckman program)

In brief, the students receive a generous stipend for 15 months of research (2 semesters + a summer), travel to two national Beckman scholar meetings, and the labs get some funds ($5k) to help support the student's work.

Historically, the program only invited mentors from CBC, EEB and MCB to be part of the Beckman Mentor pool. I want to broaden participation in the program, with PS my top choice to expand into. May I send a general solicitation e-mail to your research faculty inviting them to apply to this program? A response at your earliest convenience would be appreciated, along with any admin or listserv e-mail address that I should send the invite too. Of course, I can send it to you to disseminate.

To apply, faculty will have to complete a 2 page mentoring statement and provide a CV using the documents attached.

The main selection criteria for choosing Beckman mentors will be the strength of the mentoring statement, evidence of past effective mentoring with undergraduate researchers (e.g., papers, awards, other notable achievements), and evidence of current grant funding. The deadline for applications will likely be the end of April.

Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Best wishes,

Ross
