Changes to Email
Tuesday, March 10, several changes will be implemented in University email:
* Faculty, Staff, DCC, Student Worker, and Emeritus UAConnect365 accounts will send as @arizona.edu<https://uaatwork.arizona.edu/uannounce/send-arizonaedu-email-effective-march-10>.
* All UAConnect365 (faculty/staff) and CatMail (student) email will begin getting External Sender Notifications<https://uaatwork.arizona.edu/uannounce/external-sender-banners-email-march-10> on emails from outside the University.
* DMARC security<https://it.arizona.edu/dmarc-arizonaedu-and-you> will be implemented (monitor only, no impact to your email).
Send As @arizona.edu
This will happen automatically—no need to do anything. You may continue using email as usual March 9-10. The only effect will be that when Microsoft processes your transition, your From field will be different.
You will still also receive messages sent to email.arizona.edu. And there is no impact or change to other campus addresses, like @u.arizona.edu, @cals.arizona.edu, etc. New hires will get both arizona.edu and email.arizona.edu addresses.
For now, any login where you use your full email.arizona.edu address, you will continue to use email.arizona.edu.
Sympa email list service (@list.arizona.edu) will be down starting the evening of Monday, March 9 in order to update affected email.arizona.edu addresses to arizona.edu. Sympa service will resume as soon as the updates are complete. You can check Service Status at it.arizona.edu for updates on service availability.
External Sender Notifications (ESNs)
The Subject line of an email to UAConnect365 or CatMail from outside the University will have [EXTERNAL] added at the front of the subject. When you open the email, it will have a message across the top letting you know the email originated from outside the University.
Subject: [EXTERNAL] …
** External Email - Use Caution with Attachments, Links or Sharing Data **
A lot of phishing attempts pretend to come from someone at the university, and the “External” banner will help you recognize these fraudulent attempts.
Email will be considered “internal” (no ESN) if it comes from UAConnect365, CatMail, or another campus email system, such as math.arizona.edu, where unique filtering has been coordinated. We are currently working with campus departments who use bulk email systems, such as Constant Contact or MailChimp, to get their emails recognized as “internal.”
Email coming through Sympa lists (@list.arizona.edu) will not have a banner if the original sender is internal, and will have the banner if the original sender is external.
Not all “External” email is spam. You may receive email from many external sources—such as colleagues or vendors outside the University. You may even see the “External” banner on email from a University department, or someone from campus using their personal email. The “External” flag is meant to provide an additional layer of caution when opening and reviewing the email contents.
