Goggy Davidowitz Selected for Award - NEW!
Congratulations to Dr. Goggy Davidowitz, Associate Professor of Entomology and joint in EEB, who has been selected for the University of Arizona Distinguished Scholar Award. This award recognizes outstanding mid-career faculty who create transformative innovations in their disciplines and make highly valued contributions to teaching, research, and outreach. He has achieved international recognition for his ground-breaking research in insect physiology. He recently launched a pioneering program using insects as a source of protein to meet the challenge of feeding the world's burgeoning population.
Goggy will receive the title of Distinguished Scholar and $10,000 to support his work. Along with other outstanding faculty, he will be recognized at the Pillars of Excellence Ceremony at the UA Bookstore on Wednesday, March 28th from 4:30 - 6:30 PM.
Sarah Richman's Dissertation Defense
On Tuesday, March 20th at 3 PM in Bannister Tree Ring 110, Sarah Richman, from the Bronstein Lab, will be defending her dissertation, titled "Conditional Exploitation and Context-Dependent Fitness Consequences in Pollination Mutualisms".
Brian Enquist Elected a Fellow of ESA
Congratulations to EEB Professor Brian Enquist who has just been elected a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. Fellows are members who have made outstanding contributions to a wide range of fields served by ESA, including, but not restricted to, those that advance or apply ecological knowledge in academics, government, non-profit organizations, and the broader society. They are elected for life. Brian was elected "for seminal discoveries on the origin and diversity of organismal form and function, the natural constraints controlling the organization of ecological systems, and the application of ecological scaling laws to ecosystem function."
Course of Interest for Fall 2018
HNRS 295H | Exploring Population Science Through Creative Writing
We live in the Anthropocene, an epoch defined by human-induced environmental change. With the human population pushing 8 billion people, it's a better time than ever to explore the complex world of biological populations. Can populations grow indefinitely? How are populations forecasted by scientists? What do these forecasts mean for other species and broader ecological changes? In this course, students will engage with these urgent questions in population science. Students will discuss, read, and write about science with the help of readings and prompts based in creative writing. The course will be complimented by an online website that will help students visualize population forecasts and connect with up-to-date insights on creative nonfiction writing. Readings include two small books written by Dr. Constantino; these will be available at the UA Bookstore. High school biology and algebra are adequate prerequisites.
This course will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12 - 12:50 PM in Physics-Atmospheric Sciences Room 316. It will be available for 2 credits, and it will be taught by Dr. Robert F. Constantino, Research Professor.
